Apophenia is the perceptual phenomenon by which we can recognize familiar shapes in random data, e.g. seeing human faces or animal silhouettes in inanimate objects. The surface structure suggests something else than its proper material, depending on where/when light hits the surface, and on how shadows are created accordingly. Hidden presences, silent and harmless gazes, engaging a one-to-one correspondence with the observer. A chance to see beyond the ordinarily visible. The processes of our perception involving experience, memory, imagination, expectation, guided projection, contiguity, randomness, are intriguingly fascinating. Nothing is what it seems, really.
